Q: What are the eligibility requirements to take the Cert exam?
A: The following eligibility requirements have been implemented for our cert exams:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must hold a valid CPR card

Q: How much time should I allow to prepare for the exam?
A: It depends on your education and experience. If you have a background in the topic of your program (i.e. yoga, nutrition, exercise physiology) and have been working in the field for some time, you may only require a few weeks of review. However, if you are new to fitness you may require more time to study.

Q: How do I use the manual?
A: The manual for cert course is designed as a comprehensive guide to help prepare you for the exam, and provide a thorough written review of the topic. It will address the majority of exam questions, but not necessarily every one. If you find that the manual does not cover a particular objective or subject in as much detail you'd like, you should review the suggested readings section at the end of the manual to help you identify supplemental study materials.

Q: What factors will influence how I perform on the exam?

A: Your performance will be influenced by your preparation, education, knowledge and experience, as well as your ability to take tests. Keep in mind that while specific and careful preparation will significantly increase the probability that you will perform well, it does not guarantee a passing score.

Q: Am I permitted to bring a calculator to the exam?
A: Due to the popularity of data-storing calculators, we can not allow candidates to use their own calculators during the exam. SCW will provide calculators for exams requiring them.

Q: What test-taking strategies do you recommend when taking the SCW Fitness Education exams?

A: Listed below are strategies for taking the cert course exams as well as other standardized multiple-choice exams:

  • Pace yourself and make efficient use of your time. You should be halfway through the exam, or slightly more, when half of the exam period is up. Answer the easy questions first. Questions that are more difficult can always be answered later.
  • Read each question carefully and avoid skimming or speed reading. Be sure you understand what the question is asking. Underline key phrases and/or words: BEST, MOST, LEAST, EXCEPT, etc.
  • Try to anticipate what the answer is but still read all response options carefully before finalizing an answer. Remember that there is only one correct answer, though, and two response options may appear to be similar without careful reading.
  • Don't over-analyze or read into the question. Each question is written as clearly as possible and should be interpreted as it appears. There is no hidden meaning or attempt to trick you.
  • Eliminate the least plausible response options. Eliminating one or two response options may increase your chances of selecting the correct answer with an educated guess.
  • Take care in marking your answer sheet. Be sure that the question you are working on in your exam booklet corresponds to the mark you are making on your answer sheet.
  • Answer every question. Remember, there is no penalty for guessing.
Although first impressions are best, change your answer if you feel strongly about it.

Q: How do I begin the SCW Fitness cert program?
A: After you sign up for the cert program, you must pass the cert exam and submit a copy of a current CPR card.

Q: Can I take the exam home?
A: Under special circumstances alternative arrangements can be made. Please come to the SCW Fitness Education registration desk for more information.

Q: How long do I need to prepare with the study materials?

A: While it is wise to spend time preparing prior to the course, our presenters review all the information that will be covered on the exam throughout their workshop.

Q: Do I need to take a particular cert course before I take any others?
A: It is not required, but the Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics Fundamentals course is highly recommended for all cert attendees..

Q: Can I take retest exam on the same day?
A: Immediate retest options are available onsite for a fee. Please make arrangements with your cert presenter and register for the retest at the SCW registration desk.

Q: Why are the exam and manual priced separately?
A: The course, exam and manual are available separately to offer you the most flexibility depending on your needs and objectives in taking the course.

Q: Why have I not received my cert?
A: All SCW certs require a valid CPR card to pass the exam. To receive your cert, you must submit a copy of your current CPR card. Once we receive a copy of your CPR card we will send out your cert with renewal information.

Q: If I don't have a current CPR card; can I still take the cert?
A: You will still be able to attend the cert course and take the exam; however you will not receive a cert without a current CPR card.

Q: What do I need to send in with my renewal form?
A: When you send in your renewal application you will need to include a copy of a valid CPR card and the renewal fee. (Please retain copies of the CECs you have earned).

Q: Is there a late fee to renew the cert after expiration date?
A: An additional fee will be assessed if you choose to renew your cert after the expiration date. If you do not renew within 6 months of your cert expiration date, you will forfeit your cert and will have to retake the course in order to receive a new cert.

Q: What do I need to renew my cert?
A: To renew your SCW cert in two years, you must obtain 15 hours of continuing education credits from courses you attend after your cert issue date, a current cpr card and the renewal fee. Near the end of your cert you will receive renewal information from SCW with details on the renewal process.

Q: What courses are approved through SCW Fitness Education?
A: Courses that are approved for continuing education through ACE, AFAA, AEA, AAAI, ACSM, NASM, ICEA, IFTA, ISSA and AWHONN are also approved by SCW.

Q: Do extra CEC hours count toward the next renewal period?
A: If you have obtained more than 15 credit hours, surplus hours do not carry over into the next period.

Frequently Asked Questions (read article)

Q: Which SCW pre-cons have changed their names from "certification" to "Certificate"?
A: All of SCW Fitness Education certificate programs are simply known as "Certs" or "Certificates".

Q: Why did you change the name of SCW Pre-Con Programming?
A: The evolution of our course names is in direct response to a request by ACE, a certifying organization with which most in our industry are familiar. ACE has required all providers of ACE Continuing Education Credits (CECs), not to employ the term "certification." In our estimation, education is education and we enjoy being leaders in this field and sincerely appreciate your support.

Q: How are Certifications different from Certificates?
A: We assure you that the quality of our education remains as high and well-respected as ever. With "Certificates," you will still receive cutting edge information, presented to you live by leaders in the industry in their respective fields. You will still receive your certificate of competency for display.

Q: Is there a difference in how I maintain my Certificate?
A: No. We still require you to maintain your accomplishment as before, with 15 continuing education credit hours during your two year certificate period. As before, SCW Fitness accepts credits approved by SCW, ACE, AFAA, AEA, ACSM, NASM, IFTA, AWHONN, and NETA.

Q: What if my employer requires that I become "certified," do Certificates count?
A: Employers require many different types of credentials from their employees. After years of experience in fitness education, we have found that most employers recognize and strongly recommend SCW programming. You should verify acceptance of any specific certificate with your supervisor.

In an effort to clarify this development, please feel free to send email to scw@scwfitness.com
