We’ve all been there, rushing out after class to shop, pick up kids, or something else that requires we not shower in order to be on time! This virtually guarantees that our skin will pay the price. Break outs, irritations, or dry patches are on the way! There are, however, some easy preventative measures that might help alleviate post workout skin problems.

First, when you can, remove your makeup before you workout. This simple step can prevent mascara under the eyes or worse yet, in the eyes. It will also help preserve the integrity of your work out towel…preventing those “skin” colored stains. A fresh face will sweat more cleanly as there will be no residue to harbor bacteria or impurities. All of these benefits can be realized by simply planning ahead and washing with a disposable washcloth or even a gentle baby wipe.

As you work out, avoid “rubbing” your face with your workout towel. Pat your face, if you feel the need, with a CLEAN towel or wrist band. Be sure to never use a dirty towel. Changing your workout wrist band, towel, or other sweat absorber every time you work out will prevent souring of the item and the promotion of the bacteria that will be inevitably present after a few days in your gym bag! Paper towels, however, can be too rough possibly even causing minor cuts or abrasions to the tender skin on the face. It is recommended that you use instead a lint free hand towel or a terry cloth wristband. Just use a freshly laundered one every time!

After the workout, if your face was free of makeup before, a simple rinse with tepid water can provide sufficient cleansing in the short term. If you were unable to remove makeup prior to class, now is the time. The worst possible situation for your skin at this point is sweat laden end of day makeup. This circumstance will certainly lead to blemishes or other skin difficulties. Use a disposable wash cloth or gentle face cleanser and your hands to remove both sweat and make up. Of course, if you have the time, shower to take care of the skin beyond your face. A five minute rinse and a change of clothes can prevent chaffing, “heat” rash, and yeast infections as well as break outs.

After the wash/rinse…always moisturize, especially in the winter. Skin that has been sweaty loses protective oils and is prone to dry spots and itchiness. Choose whatever creams or lotions you prefer, but look for those that are hypoallergenic and have an SPF rating of 15 or higher. The ultimate act of skin care is to prevent sun damage. Not only will your skin look younger, but you may also be warding off serious diseases such as skin cancer and melanoma.

Exercisers do so much to take care of their bodies. Your skin deserves a little TLC as well. Skin is the body’s largest organ and it is our first line of defense against disease and injury. The healthier your skin is, the healthier you can be. Keep it clean and well moisturized, drink plenty of water, and eat your veggies! Now you know!
