Baby, it's COLD outside! Working out when weather is an issue can discourage the novice or the post-holiday guilt exerciser! No one enjoys taking the extra time to warm up the car and slip on the snow boots "just" to go to the gym. Missing that workout, however, is not worth it. Muscular atrophy (strength loss) can occur in as little as 72 hours. Making sure you workout at least every other day is your best bet for maintaining and improving strength. Below find some tips for surviving winter without expanding your waistline!

1. Layers: If you plan to run, walk, ski or even shovel snow outdoors, layers are your very best option. Make sure that the layer closest to your skin is water wicking so that when you sweat, you do not become itchy or uncomfortable. Additional layers should be natural fibers that "breathe". As your body warms, some of those layers will likely get peeled off. Make sure your head, ears, hands and feet remain covered and adjust the layers on the rest of your body for your comfort. As you cool down, you will find that you need to replace your layers. It is important to note that it is almost as dangerous to over dress as it is to under-dress. Be diligent to ensure you do not over heat. Also, if you are peeling layers while on your running route, be sure to plan how you will tie, pack or drop them along the way so that they are easily recovered.

According to current research, 96% of personal trainers offer balance training to their clients. Furthermore, use of small, portable equipment is favored. It is undeniable that balance is becoming a central focus of the professional fitness community.

At some point during the fitness revolution, the functionality of exercises and benefits to everyday life were lost. Certainly, anything that gets people moving is a step in the right direction. However, many of today's workouts are focused on strength and cardiovascular training for aesthetic changes.
