Owner's EDGE

REMEMBER THE TITANS is a fabulous movie about football that features a wonderful quote, “Attitude Reflects Leadership.” Sometimes, in the throws of the daily struggle of owning a business, leaders identify the attitudes that create problems within the work place. As we approach a new year, perhaps we should look at ourselves in order to effect change in others. A review of leadership styles is a good place to begin.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE: This is much easier said than done. Leading an army to war can be done by example. One can lead a team effort by going in first, working the hardest and longest, or by creating the opportunities that allow others to be successful (think a blocker in football). In a real office setting, however, it can be difficult to lead by example beyond basic work ethic. Can the office manager lead the accountant or creative director by example? Everything about the nature of their work is different. Other than showing up on time, having a good attitude, and cleaning up after him/herself, there is not much “example” setting that can be done when roles vary greatly within the office. In order to lead by example, therefore, it is important to identify the behavior you are wanting to change. Is the community kitchen always left a mess?

When sitting on an exercise ball, the body is constantly making adjustments with key postural muscles that include abdominals, lower back muscles, gluteals and leg muscles. But, user beware! Similar to expensive ergonomic chairs, individuals can still have poor posture on the stability ball.
