Retreats are an incredibly effective way to step back from the daily grind and take an overall look at the business, brainstorm new ideas or even address personal issues and goals. It’s a time to turn off computers and cell phones, get in a room and TALK. Really talk! A novel idea, right? Following are ten tips for holding your own retreat:
1) Plan ahead. In order for the retreat to be productive, it needs to meet the current needs of your team. Doing this effectively will take some planning. Don't expect to throw together an agenda and activity materials the day before. Also as the facilitator, your involvement in the discussion will be key. Your introduction and closing statements will set the tone. Be open, informative, and clear with information and expectations from prep, to the meetings, to the follow up.

The Zumba® instructor lets out a joyous “Woot!” and quickly smiles and gestures for her students to watch. She points to her eyes, slaps her thigh and proceeds to step forward, step back, step forward, step back. The class follows. The music accelerates. As sweat streams down the students’ faces, they crack smiles and anticipate her next move. Some laugh. Some clap. Some cheer. They’re having a blast. As the song ends, the room buzzes with excitement.
You may have seen a Zumba® class in action and thought it looked fun, interesting, and maybe even a little crazy. You’re right. A Zumba® class is a party – a fitness-party. It’s a high-energy, dance-fitness workout that takes participants and even the instructors themselves on a one-hour thrill ride of muscle pumping and cardio training, cleverly disguised as Latin-inspired dance-fitness moves.

“Drop and give me 20, soldier!” Those are words you have heard if you have ever served in the Armed Forces. You may have also heard them of late in an exercise class. Yes, in a group exercise room, a park or even in a corporate, conference center. That is because the fitness industry has adapted the one format, the one genre, the one program that anyone would feel confidant to try. It is called Boot Camp. If have been thinking of starting a boot camp class or a boot camp program, here are a few tips to ensure your “Platoon accomplishes the mission”
- Always warm up your troops. Try putting your troops in formation and sing a little cadence. It makes them feel like “soldiers”.
- Create workouts that build camaraderie and cohesiveness. Partner your troops up and have them work in teams.
- Create strategies to encourage adherence to your classes. Offer “encouragement” (push-ups, squat thrusts, etc.) to those who miss class or show up late.
